We've come a long way since the late nineteenth century when the company was first formed by the Reverend Samuel Antliff of Huddersfield with a capital of just £50,000. To learn more about our history click on the timeline dates below.
1891
Founded as the Congregational Fire Insurance Company by the Reverend Samuel Antliff, Pastor of Ramsden Street Congregational Church in Huddersfield with capital of £50,000. In its first year, 445 policies were issued insuring property for £906,000.
1895
Moved to Bradford and made the first grant of £50 to a charity, the Congregational Church Aid and Home Missionary Society.
1907
The Independent Insurance Company Limited was formed to enable Trustees and Officers of Congregational Churches to insure against liability in view of the Workmen's Compensation Act which came in to force on 1st July 1907. Later the same year it became The Congregational Insurance Company Ltd.
1908
The buildings of private homes and their contents are insured for the first time.
1909
Burglary insurance is undertaken.
1914 - 1918
Insurance transacted on behalf of the Government against aircraft and bombardment.
1923
Consequential loss policies issued and insurance against third parties also undertaken.
1939
War halts business progress with nearly half the male staff in the forces and the added burden of operating War Damage Insurance on behalf of the Government.
1956
The Congregational Insurance Charitable Trust is formed and disburses grants to churches, schools, colleges and community projects from payments made to it from the Insurance Company profits.
1972
Became Congregational & General Insurance Company Ltd.
1980
Brokers were first introduced to launch home buildings and contents business.
1981
Congregational & General Insurance Company Limited becomes Congregational & General Insurance plc.
1986
Current offices at Currer House purchased.
1987
The new Congregational & General Charitable Trust is formed and continues to disburse grants.
1994
Became wholly-owned by the Congregational & General Charitable Trust.
1999
'nest' a new household product is introduced to the market.
2003
Record trading year.
2005
Congregational & General produced record profits and increased business. This improved success has enabled the Company to increase the distribution to our parent company, Congregational & General Charitable Trust, which means that this year more contribution can be made to the trust and in turn more grants can be given to churches and charitable causes.
Carlo Cavaliere appointed as Managing Director.
2006
shared-values home insurance introduced, offering competive home insurance direct to consumers.
2007
100th AGM held in August, which puts Congregational & General in the top 0.1% of UK companies still trading after a century.
